“精灵宝可梦”游戏推出系统更新，最主要的改变，就是为游戏内建评估精灵潜质的功能。
选择进化哪只精灵不仅要参考它的CP值（战斗力），也要参考他的潜力，那就是IV值，不过这个属于隐藏数据，需要使用第三方应用程序或网站来计算。
不过，更新版的游戏如今派出神秘团队（Team Mystic）、英勇团队（Team Valor）和天才团队（Team Instinct）的队长，为团员评估旗下精灵的潜质。
更新游戏之后，玩家只要点击精灵档案右下角的图标，再点选第二项的“Appraise”，队长就会出场点评，但是，哪些评语最关键呢？
●“Overall, your (Pokemon) is a wonder! What a breathtaking Pokemon!”/“Overall, your (Pokemon) looks like it can really battle with the best of them! ”/“Overall, your (Pokemon) simply amazes me. It can accomplish anything!”：这意味着精灵的IV值在总分45当中，获得至少37分，算是一等一的精灵，可以认真考虑进化！
●“Overall, your (Pokemon) has certainly caught my attention.”/“Overall, your (Pokemon) is really strong!”/“Overall, your (Pokemon) is a strong Pokemon. You should be proud!”：精灵的潜力稍微逊色，得到30至36分，算是不错，不过或许不宜进化。
●除此之外，队长也会评论精灵的强项在于攻击（Attack）、防御（Defense）或耐力（Stamina），让玩家进一步参考。
